Oil cleansing, or to be more specific, the Oil Cleansing Method, is a topic that comes up often where natural skincare is concerned. While the idea may sound counter productive (especially to those with oily skin), this method can be surprisingly effective in reality. The secret to getting the most out of cleansing your skin with oil is choosing the right oils for your skin type.
There are many, many oils out there – each offering unique benefits to your skin. While one oil may do wonders for someone with dry skin, it may not have quite the same success for someone with combination skin however.
Like many other natural skin treatments, results can vary. It can take some trial and error to find oils that your skin loves. The good news is that, unlike harsh, drying cleansers that are loaded with chemicals and other skin-damaging ingredients, natural oils are good for your skin.
Oil Cleansing Method for All Skin Types
Which oils should you be using to cleanse your skin? Castor oil is often used as the base for oil cleansing blends. Adding some additional oils that are suited to your skin will give the best results. Here are some ideas to try, organised according to skin type.
- Dry Skin Oils
If your skin is prone to dryness, flaky patches and roughness, you need oils that provide extra moisture and long-lasting nourishment. Oils for dry skin include avocado, sweet almond and olive oil. If your skin is sensitive, you could also try jojoba, apricot kernel and calendula oils as well.
- Oily Skin Oils
If your skin is oily and prone to breakouts, you need lighter oils that do not clog up the pores. Grapeseed oil provides moisture without being greasy, while jojoba oil has a very similar to the body’s natural oil, making it ideal for almost all skin types. Other oils to try include hazelnut and neem oils.
- Balanced Skin Oils
If your skin is more on the balanced side – neither overly dry or oily – you can use a lighter oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or grapeseed, or you can try a vitamin enriched oil such as carrot seed or rose hip to give your skin an added boost.
- Anti-aging Oils
If your skin is mature and you want extra radiance and protection, skins such as rosehip, sea buckthorn, hemp seed, evening primrose, macadamia nut and argan oil are all great for your skin.
Not sure how the Oil Cleansing Method works? It’s really simple. Apply your oil blend directly to your face using your fingers or a cotton wool ball, massaging into the skin. Then, use a hot face cloth that has been soaked in the warmest water you can handle, wiping the oil residue off in an upwards motion. You can follow that up with a natural toner made from witch hazel, rose water or green tea, with a natural moisturiser or serum to finish.
One last word of advice… you may find that one type of oil works for a bit, only to stop working the next time you cleanse. Before you give up this natural skincare cleansing method, try a different oil or adjust the balance of base oil to additional oil. Your skin will thank you for it!
